What is a “nutritionist” or a registered dietitian?

A registered dietitian (RD) is a food and nutrition expert who  has met the stringent requirements set forth by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), the Academy of Nutrition and the Dietetics (AND) and Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).  

A rigorous national board exam must be passed to earn the RD designation.  Additional licensure is then granted by the state in which the RD practices allowing the use of the Licensed Dietitian (LD) or Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) designation.  The use of RD and LD or LDN requires extensive continuing education credits thereafter to hold status. 

Most people confuse “nutritionist” with “registered dietitian (RD)”.  Anyone can call him/herself a “nutritionist” regardless of education achieved since nutrition is not a regulated profession.  Only a registered dietitian has the thorough and advanced education to be considered an expert in the science of nutrition according to the regulatory bodies mentioned above.

The RDs at Family Nutrition Consultants help you fine-tune your nutritional needs by tailoring an eating plan for your body.  Even if individuals are of the same family and share similarities, each individual’s body is different in how it responds to food and nutrients.

Most diseases are brought on by improper diet and poor nutrition over an extended period of time.
